Providing vision, innovation and leadership on Climate Change

The UK’s contribution in responding to the climate crisis will be measured not just in the quantity of emissions we reduce, but in the quality of the vision, innovation and leadership we provide.

Introduction

Originally established in 2015, and relaunched in 2023, the Climate APPG seeks to run events and activities in parliament with the purpose of advancing understanding of policy issues surrounding climate change and enabling cross-party discussion and action on climate policy.

Ambitious climate action will not only support the UK’s climate goals and help to secure a safe future, but critically has the capability to deliver an energy transition that unlocks economic opportunity, enhances the UK’s energy security, protects households from volatile gas prices permanently and, by championing the alternatives, lead to warmer, more secure homes, and quality jobs across all regions of the UK.

The need to transition away from our fossil fuel based economy, to reliable, safe and affordable energy has never been clearer. The spike in global gas prices, and resulting cost-of-living crisis has given an even greater incentive to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. The race to zero carbon will not only support the UK’s climate goals and secure a safe future, but critically has the capability to deliver an energy transition that unlocks economic opportunity, enhances the UK’s energy security, protects households from volatile gas prices permanently and, by championing the alternatives, lead to warmer, more secure homes, and quality jobs across all regions of the UK. The Climate APPG will act as the cross-party voice for ambitious climate action in the UK parliament, and the many benefits it can bring to the UK.

The Climate APPG will work to achieve five bold goals that are designed to repower the UK in a way that safeguards the planet for future generations whilst unlocking economic opportunities, strengthening energy security and cutting the cost of living.

Mission Goals

Goal

1

Transform the North Sea's economic future

Exploring how the UK can transition away from oil and gas extraction, whilst supporting the alternatives, and regional opportunities of the energy transition.

Goal

2

Boost energy security by scaling the alternatives

Championing the roll out of renewables, energy efficiency, the infrastructure needed for a decarbonised grid, and the benefits this can bring to the UK economy, and cost to consumers.

Goal

3

Build a net zero workforce

Engaging with unions, academics, and business to secure the building blocks of a fair transition for workers, whilst empowering communities and regions across the UK.

Goal

4

Aligning energy development with nature protection

Acknowledging the crucial role that flourishing biodiversity can play in storing carbon and working to honour our commitments to protect and restore nature.

Goal

5

Encourage UK climate leadership on the world stage

International rhetoric must be matched by domestic action, supporting action on global fossil fuel phase out, and seeking to join and lead in international fora.
